ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (Feb. 25, 2022) – Hot off their achievements at the Beijing 2022 Olympic Games, three Ocala, Fla. Team USA medal winners will join the pre-race action for the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg presented by RP Funding this Sunday, Feb. 27. Speed skaters and great friends Brittany Bowe, Erin Jackson and Joey Mantia each will partake in honorary roles before the 26-car field takes the green flag for the season-opening NTT INDYCAR SERIES race.

Ahead of the green flag, Erin Jackson will ride in the Ruoff Mortgage ‘Fastest Seat in Sports’, and her winter games teammate Brittany Bowe will join Joey Mantia in waving the green flag to start the 100-lap race at approximately 12:30 p.m. EST on Sunday. All three are former world champion in-line skaters on wheels before switching over to competing on ice.

Jackson is the first U.S. woman to win a speed skating gold at the Olympics since Bonnie Blair did so in 1994. She is also the first Black woman to win an individual medal in speed skating at the Olympics. Bowe claimed a bronze medal of her own, and she had graciously given up a spot in order for her teammate Jackson to compete in these recent winter games. Erin had an unfortunate slip in the trials and Brittany’s gesture reopened the door for her to compete, and she made the most of it with her historic feat.

Joey Mantia will join Bowe in the starter’s stand on Sunday after the three-time Olympian claimed a long track speed skating bronze medal in Beijing. He also won a second bronze as part of the men’s team pursuit event. As announced last month, St. Petersburg Mayor Ken Welch will give the command for drivers to start their engines as the race’s grand marshal just before the three Floridians participate in their latest once in a lifetime experiences.

“These are three of the finest speed skaters in the world, and they demonstrated and exemplified the true Olympic team spirit. We’re honored to have them join us at this great Florida event, the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg presented by RP Funding,” said Kim Green, co-owner, chairman and CEO of Green Savoree St. Petersburg, LLC, organizers of the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg Presented by RP Funding. “They are extraordinary athletes just like the drivers who compete at their limits in every NTT INDYCAR SERIES race.”

Preceding Sunday’s race, INDYCAR Party in the Park happens 4-6 p.m. ET on Saturday, Feb. 26, in North Straub Park, with a fireworks display later at 8 p.m. ET. These are both free community events open to the public.

St. Petersburg City Council unanimously extends Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg through 2026

Grand Prix will return to its traditional March date in 2022

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (June 9, 2021) – The Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburgwill remain a cornerstone event on the downtown streets and waterfront through at least 2026. St. Petersburg City Council unanimously approved a two-year extension to the existing agreement with Green Savoree St. Petersburg, LLC (GSSP) on June 3rd.
This spring break racing tradition has been a marquee event on the NTT INDYCAR SERIES’ annual calendar for the past 17 years. The Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg brings worldwide exposure and spectators from across the globe to the City of St. Petersburg.
“I am thrilled that the Grand Prix will be in the Sunshine City through 2026. I want to thank City Council for recognizing the importance of this race in St. Pete,” said St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman. “I also want to thank Kim (Green) and Kevin (Savoree), and everyone at the Grand Prix for not only organizing and promoting one of our city’s best events year after year, but for their dedication to our community.”
Set to return to its traditional position on the calendar during the second weekend of March in 2022, the dates for the next five Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg races are:
March 10-13, 2022March 9-12, 2023March 7-10, 2024March 6-9, 2025March 12-15, 2026
“There is no better backdrop than downtown St. Petersburg and its picturesque waterfront for the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg to showcase the NTT INDYCAR SERIES,” said Kim Green, co-owner, chairman and CEO of GSSP. “The success and continued growth of the event has only been possible with the overwhelming support and collaboration with the City of St. Petersburg’s Councillors, Mayor Kriseman and his fantastic team.”
The City of St. Petersburg’s “Embrace the Race” campaign has worked alongside local businesses to create a great experience for visitors. The efforts multiply the economic impact which the race has on St. Petersburg and local surrounding communities each year.
The event has also had an ongoing impact on the local community through fundraising efforts for the Police Athletic League of St. Petersburg. Over a four-year span via the MBA 5K Run on the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg Track, over $216,000 has been raised for the Police Athletic League and American Stage Theatre. The 5K run and walk event is planned to return in 2022 after being put on pause for 2021.
The Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg is run on a 1.8-mile, 14-turn temporary waterfront circuit that includes a combination of adjacent downtown streets circling Pioneer Park, The Mahaffey Theater, the Salvador Dali Museum and extending onto the runways of Albert Whitted Airport. The set up and tear down process has become more efficient each year. Most recently it took 25 days to construct the circuit and the removal was done within six days thanks to the support of local vendors like Stepp’s Towing and the development of a collaborated plan with the City of St. Petersburg’s administration and events team.

This year it will be the second race on the NTT INDYCAR SERIES schedule since the postponement from the first weekend of March in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The shift to a later April weekend provides the opportunity for more fans to attend.

Coinciding with this announcement, the exclusive renewal period begins today (March 4) for race fans who attended last year’s Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg and purchased 3-Day tickets. These customers will have until Monday, March 15th at 5 p.m. ET to renew their 3-Day Reserved Grandstand seats or General Admission tickets. “On behalf of the entire Green Savoree Racing Promotions team, thank you to the staff at Penske Entertainment and the NTT INDYCAR SERIES and of course, Mayor Kriseman and his great team at the City, and St. Pete City Council for all their hard work in making this rescheduled date happen,” said Kevin Savoree, co-owner, president and COO of GSSP. “We’re looking forward to the last weekend in April for the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. And, especially we greatly appreciate the patience of our fans as we work through all the planning. Let’s go!”

Each of these races takes an incredible amount of work from hundreds of dedicated professionals, and I know the decision to move the date of the race is not made lightly,” said St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman. “I appreciate the drivers, teams, staff, and most of all the fans for their patience and understanding. I look forward to welcoming everyone to the next Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.”

The event usually kicks off the INDYCAR season, and last year served as the thrilling season finale for the NTT INDYCAR SERIES due to its postponement in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. “It’s not surprising that an event of this magnitude, scheduled for the first week of March, is still subject to the implications of the pandemic,” Penske Entertainment Corp. President and CEO Mark Miles said. “We’re delighted we were able to work with Mayor Rick Kriseman’s administration and Green Savoree Racing Promotions to find a more suitable date, which helps consolidate the beginning of our schedule and allows us to stay on NBC network television.”

Our team is looking forward to kicking off another season in March in sunny St. Pete!”
The 2019 season did not disappoint. Some of the notable racing highlights delivered from Green Savoree Racing Promotions events to fans and festival-goers included:
  • The NTT IndyCar Season kicked off for the ninth year in a row at the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. It started with a dominant win on March 10th for Josef Newgarden and ended with a season championship for the Team Penske driver.
  • The Team Penske duo of Dane Cameron and Juan Pablo Montoya, piloting the No. 6 Acura ARX-05 DPi machine, won the Acura Sports Car Challenge at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course the first weekend of May. The victory was key to another Team Penske championship-winning season in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in 2019.
  • On the streets of Toronto in mid-July, 2019’s Indianapolis 500 winner Simon Pagenaud had a near perfect weekend at the Honda Indy. The Team Penske driver started on pole and led 80 of the 85 laps including the last 63. It was also the fastest race in Honda Indy Toronto history concluding in 1:30:16.4388.
  • “Mr. Mid-Ohio” Scott Dixon claimed his record sixth Indy car win on the demanding 2.25-mile, 13-turn Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on July 28th. Driving the No. 9 PNC Bank Honda for Chip Ganassi Racing, the victory was by the narrowest of margins at 0.0934 seconds over his teammate Felix Rosenqvist, also the closest Indy car finish at Mid-Ohio and third closest on a road course in Indy car history.
  • The NASCAR Xfinity Series returned in early August to Mid-Ohio for the seventh time. Another Team Penske driver came out on top with Austin Cindric hustling his No. 22 PPG Ford to victory lane. It was a cherished and memorable victory for Cindric as his late grandfather Jim Trueman once owned Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
  • The 2019 trend continued making it five wins for Team Penske at Green Savoree Racing Promotions’ events. Will Power took top podium honors over Labor Day weekend in the Grand Prix of Portland. Power’s first win on Portland International Raceway brought his career full-circle as the 1.964-mile, 12-turn permanent road course is also where he did his very first Indy car test.
