MOORESVILLE, N.C. (May 1, 2015) – Team Penske announced today that it has partnered with Avaya as a team sponsor for the 2015 season in both the Verizon IndyCar Series and the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Simon Pagenaud will pilot the No. 22 Avaya Team Penske Dallara/Chevrolet for at least four Verizon IndyCar Series events in his first season with Team Penske, including the 99th running of the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, May 24. Avaya will also adorn the side of the No. 2 Ford Fusion driven by Brad Keselowski in the Sprint Cup Series event at Kansas Speedway on Saturday, May 9.

The Avaya partnership was fostered through the established, long-term relationship between Team Penske and HP. Recap: Will Power battled back from an early penalty for a solid fourth-place finish in Sunday’s Grand Prix of Alabama at Barber Motorsports Park. Drivers got through the opening laps without major incidents, but there were minor ones that resulted in reviews by Verizon IndyCar Series officials. Power was warned about blocking his teammate, Simon Pagenaud, on the first lap of the race. Then the series champion was penalized on Lap 26 for avoidable contact when his car struck Takuma Sato’s car as Power exited the pits. That penalty dropped him to last in the 23-car field. Power then rallied with a marvelous drive and timely strategy to finish fourth, his sixth top-five finish in the six races contested at Barber.

Power Quote:  “I’m proud of the Verizon Chevy Team today. For me to come back from the back after the penalty and finish P4 was a great job by our team.  I feel bad for what happened with Sato. I didn’t see him, which was unfortunate. I think the race as a whole in Barber was the best all year so far.  At this point we will look to Indy for a win.”

Recap: Juan Pablo Montoya dropped to the back of the field early in the Grand Prix of Alabama after a penalty for avoidable contact on Lap 26 before returning to the pits two laps later to change the front wing on his car. The trip down pit road dropped him to last place in the running order when he returned to the racing surface. He used pit strategy and speed to move his way back through the field, but he wasn’t able to consistently run with the race leaders. Sunday’s result marked his first outside of the top five this season. Montoya, however, maintained his points lead in the Verizon IndyCar Series championship standings, now just three points ahead of Team Penske teammate Helio Castroneves.

Montoya Quote:  “We had a long day with the No. 2 Hawk Performance Chevy. We started with a bad qualifying effort, but we seemed to be in an okay position to dig ourselves out of the hole at one point. We were racing with (Ryan) Hunter-Reay and he finished fifth. It’s hard to race with some of the guys in the back of the pack. They are young and sometimes make moves like you aren’t even there when you are right beside them. So we ended up with two broken wings and a 14th-place finish.”

No. 3 AAA Insurance Team Penske Dallara/Chevrolet – Helio Castroneves

Recap: Helio Castroneves started from the pole position and led the first 18 laps of the race, but lost the lead to Team Penske teammate Simon Pagenaud and later to eventual winner Josef Newgarden, on pit road. Despite having slight handling issues over the course of the race, Castroneves was able to maintain his position at the front of the field as the leaders began making their final pit stops of the day at lap 62. Unfortunately, Newgarden and Scott Dixon were able to stretch their fuel mileage a bit further on that round of pit stops, allowing them to stay in front of Castroneves over the final laps of the race and eventually the three-time Indy 500 winner had to come back to pit road with one lap remaining for a splash of fuel to make it to the end as he fell from fourth to 15th at the checkered flag.
Castroneves Quote:  “Not the finish we hoped for the AAA Insurance Chevrolet. There was just a bit of miscommunication on our fuel number that, unfortunately, caused us to have to pit with one lap left. You never want to see the white flag on pit road. We were basically on the same strategy with Newgarden and Dixon, but they were able to pit a lap or two later than we were and that gave them a better fuel number to meet. Unfortunately that caused us to come up short. I hate it because the AAA guys gave me another car that could’ve easily won the race, but it was a crazy race out there today.”

Recap: Pagenaud held steady for another top-10 finish in the young Verizon IndyCar Series season. The Team Penske newcomer was involved in some early-race drama with teammate, Will Power, as several of the top qualifiers bunched together upon entry into the first turn, which resulted in a blocking warning to Power from race control. Pagenaud led three laps of the 90-lap race and battled gamely in the late stages for his third top-10 finish of 2015. He took the lead from Team Penske teammate Helio Castroneves on Lap 19 and held it through Lap 21, when he pitted and surrendered the lead to eventual winner Josef Newgarden.

Pagenaud Quote:  “We had plenty of pace in the Penske Truck Rental Chevrolet. Plenty. Plenty. We would have challenged for the win. In the first stint when we got by Will (Power) we were looking really strong coming up on Helio (Castroneves) and (Josef) Newgarden. It was a little bit of a shame. We just got unlucky with the yellow (flag) there. From then on we had to be really aggressive and attack and pass people, which we did. That was fun from that part; I’m happy with my driving. But, I feel like we had a much better car than the result we actually had, but there are always some outside factors you can’t control. Congratulations to Newgarden on his first win. He deserves it. He has been knocking on the door for a long time. I’m really happy for him.”

Pagenaud, who is currently seventh in the series point standings after three events in his first year at Team Penske, will look to make it back-to-back wins at the 14-turn circuit.

The Angie’s List Grand Prix of Indianapolis, run on the 2.434-mile road course that incorporates portions of Turns 1 and 2 and the front straight of the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval, is set for Saturday, May 9 at 3:30 pm ET. The race will be broadcast live on ABC.

Recap: Will Power started the race from the 18thposition – a result of being caught out by an untimely caution flag in qualifying on Saturday. With a fast car, Power felt he could make up ground early but, unfortunately, the reigning Verizon IndyCar Series champion ran into issues during the race as well. He stalled the No. 1 Verizon Dallara/Chevrolet on his first pit stop when another competitor lost power in front of him and a dropped wheel nut on Power’s second stop led to him falling two laps down to the race leaders. The Verizon team did all it could on pit strategy, but the Power could not catch a caution flag when it was needed. Sunday’s result was his worst since finishing 24th at Sao Paulo, Brazil in 2013. However, Power is a two-time winner at Barber Motorsports Park, site of next week’s Grand Prix of Alabama, where he will look to get back on track.


Quote: “I feel bad for the Verizon Chevy Team. They worked so hard and me finishing P20 was a result of a bad day in qualifying. I didn’t get it done and it was a snowball effect from there. Today I made mistakes and I stalled the car on pit road during the first pit stop. Was hoping for a top-10 finish but it didn’t happen. It makes me more motivated to make up for it the next couple of races.”

 

No. 2 Verizon Team Penske Dallara/Chevrolet – Juan Pablo Montoya

Recap: Juan Pablo Montoya started the Grand Prix of Long Beach from the second position before dropping to the third spot early in the event. He and teammate, Simon Pagenaud, entertained the fans with a thrilling battle several times during the event, including the final 10 laps as the two raced hard for third place. Montoya held on to the spot for the 20th podium of his Verizon IndyCar Series career. Montoya, who finished fourth at Long Beach last year, posted his first-ever IndyCar win at Long Beach in 1999. The finish allowed him to maintain his lead in the Verizon IndyCar Series standings as he is now just three points ahead of teammate Helio Castroneves.

 

Quote: “Our Verizon Chevy was strong all day. We hung in there the entire race and everyone did a good job. I had a really good run on Helio at the start. He made a move on me and I had to check up, which lost me one spot to (Sunday’s race winner Scott) Dixon. We ran strong all day and ended with another podium, which is great for the points battle. Two podiums in three races is a bit different start than we had last year and that is something I’m very proud of.”

Recap: Helio Castroneves led the first 29 laps of the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach before being passed by Scott Dixon, who went on to win, during the first round of pit stops. Castroneves had to hold in his pit stall after his service was complete to avoid any contact with the No. 10 car of Tony Kanaan that was entering the pit stall ahead of Castroneves. As he raced hard for his second consecutive runner-up result, Castroneves earned the 121st top-five finish of his career. On Saturday,Castroneves established a new track record with a lap of 1:06.6294 to win the Verizon P1 Pole Award for the race. It was the 42nd pole position of Castroneves’ 18-year career. The finish moved Castroneves to second in the Verizon IndyCar Series standings, just three points behind the leader, Team Penske teammate Juan Pablo Montoya.

 

Quote: “The Automobile Club of Southern California Chevy was on rails. It was a really competitive day between our Team Penske teammates. Certainly Scott (Dixon) did a great job on the in lap and the out lap on the first pit stop. My guys did a helluva job too. It was just a chess game out there today. The track changed so much over the course of the race. We had to constantly try to stay ahead of that, from adjustments to driving style. I can’t give my team enough credit for the job they did all weekend. We had a great car and just came up a bit short.”

Recap: After starting fifth on Sunday, Simon Pagenaud quickly made his way into the fourth position during the early portion of the Grand Prix of Long Beach, then pressured his teammate Juan Pablo Montoya for third place over the final 10 laps. The fourth-place result was his best of the season, his first with Team Penske. Pagenaud previously finished fifth at the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg and 20th after contact took him out of contention late last weekend at the Indy Grand Prix of Louisiana at NOLA Motorsports Park. Pagenaud’s finish made it three Team Penske cars inside the top four on Sunday. Pagenaud is now ranked seventh in the championship standings, 46 points behind the leader, teammate Juan Pablo Montoya.

 

Quote: “It was a good race out there today, a lot of fun. The Penske Truck Rental Chevy was really fast today. I just wish I could’ve made my way past Helio there. That would have changed the whole complexion of the race. It was a good fight. I have to take my hat off to my engineers. They gambled a bit on this setup and the car was mega fast today. Next time we just need to start a bit closer to the front and it may be a different story.”

Recap: Helio Castroneves set a new Verizon IndyCar Series track record on Saturday with a lap of 1:06.6294 to win the Verizon P1 Pole Award for the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. It marked the 42nd pole position won by Castroneves in his IndyCar career. Team Penske took three of the top five starting positions, including the front row of Castroneves and Juan Pablo Montoya. Simon Pagenaud will start fifth on Sunday. Will Power was caught out when Stefano Coletti crashed during the second round of the first qualifying session, bringing out a caution flag and preventing Power from posting a fast time. Team Penske has won four of the last six pole positions at Long Beach: three in a row by Power (2009-2011) and Ryan Briscoe in 2012. Power, who will start 18th on Sunday, won the race in 2008 and 2012, and finished second last year. Montoya, who finished fourth at Long Beach last year, also posted his first IndyCar win at the historic street circuit in 1999.

Coverage: The Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach will air live on Sunday afternoon, April 19 at 4:00 p.m. ET on the NBC Sports Network. The race will also be broadcast live on the IMS Radio Network, XM Channel 209 and Sirius Channel 213.

Recap: Will Power chased Team Penske teammate Juan Pablo Montoya through much of the race before a handful of cars stayed out on track during the final round of pit stops to finish in front of the current series champion. The seventh-place finish dropped Power to third place in the Verizon IndyCar Series driver standings, 14 points behind Montoya, who maintained his lead by finishing in the fifth position. Power ran in the second position for 32 of the 47 laps of the timed race, but fell to the eighth position on Lap 32 when he pitted with the leaders while six drivers — James Hinchcliffe, Carlos Huertas, Team Penske teammate Helio Castroneves, James Jakes, Tony Kanaan and Simona de Silvestro — stayed on track and occupied the first six positions when the race resumed on Lap 39. However, multiple caution periods during the final eight laps prevented Power from catching the new leaders and he settled for seventh.

Quote: “The Verizon Chevy boys did a great job despite the difficult conditions. It was frustrating that we couldn’t go green most of the time and those were difficult conditions when you’re on slicks (tires). Great battling when we went green for a few laps and it was a lot of fun, but it didn’t last long. So, disappointed for the fans that they didn’t get to see is at our absolute best. We’ll just look forward for even better results in Long Beach.”

No. 2 Verizon Team Penske Dallara/Chevrolet – Juan Pablo Montoya

Recap: Juan Pablo Montoya led the first 32 laps of the race, but lost the lead when six cars stayed out on track while the leaders pitted on Lap 32. Two subsequent caution periods prevented Montoya from trying to chase down the leaders, but he did move up two positions in the final 15 laps to finish fifth and maintain his lead in the Verizon IndyCar Series driver standings. Montoya, who started first when qualifying was canceled Saturday because of inclement weather and the field was set by points, raced away from his competitors on a wet track at the start of the race and held the lead through four yellow flags during the caution-filled race. Team Penske teammate Will Power stalked Montoya through the first 32 laps as all four Team Penske drivers held down the top four spots early in the race.

Quote: “We definitely had a fast Verizon Chevy today and it’s good to come away from NOLA with a top five. I think it’s one of those deals where we kind of caught a break yesterday starting on pole with the weather but our luck went the other way today. The cool thing is two races in a row to start the season Team Penske has had the fastest cars and I am very excited about that. I’m looking forward to getting back to Long Beach next week. Hopefully we can keep the ball rolling there.”

No. 3 Hitachi Team Penske Dallara/Chevrolet – Helio Castroneves

Recap: Helio Castroneves rallied from an incident early in the race to finish second in the inaugural Indy Grand Prix of Louisiana at NOLA Motorsports Park on Sunday. The front wing of the No. 3 Hitachi Team Penske Chevrolet driven by Castroneves was damaged as a result of contact early on and it had to be replaced as the three-time Indy 500 winner fell to 20th in the running order, but the team kept fighting and through deft pit strategy Castroneves returned to finish second behind James Hinchcliffe. The result moved Castroneves up to second place, just 10 points behind Team Penske teammate Juan Pablo Montoya, in the Verizon IndyCar Series standings after two races of the 2015 season. Castroneves was running third when his car collided with one driven by Francesco Dracone on Lap 20 after Dracone cut across the nose of his Chevrolet in Turn 1. The contact damaged the left front wing on Castroneves car, and the subsequent pit stop for repairs on Lap 22 dropped him back in the field. However, with his strategy changed because of the unexpected pit stop, Castroneves was able to remain on track while the leaders pitted on Lap 32 of the timed race. He was able to restart in third on Lap 39 before passing James Jakes for second place on Lap 40. Unfortunately two late caution periods prevented Castroneves from trying to catch Hinchcliffe for the win. The finish marked the 120th top-five result in Castroneves in 397 career starts.

Quote: “First of all I have to give congratulations to the track, the entire Verizon IndyCar Series and all the fans for the first race here at NOLA. The track conditions were really difficult because there were areas where there was a stream of water on the race track and it was very difficult for us to keep the cars on there. But the Hitachi boys, man, they awesome. Roger (Penske), (engineer) Jonathan (Diuguid) and everybody never gave up…..I never gave up and at the end of the day to be taking second place – it’s a very happy day.”

No. 22 Team Penske Chevrolet – Simon Pagenaud

Recap: Simon Pagenaud ran among the top-four cars for 28 of the first 32 laps before he was shuffled back in the field after a late pit stop. While attempting to make his way back through the field he was involved in a three-car crash that dropped him to a disappointed 20th-place finish. Pagenaud, who started fifth, moved up to fourth on Lap 4 and stayed there until Lap 32, when he pitted with teammates Juan Pablo Montoya and Will Power under caution while six other drivers — including teammate Helio Castroneves — stayed on track. On Lap 43, while running eighth, Pagenaud was involved in a crash with Ryan Hunter-Reay and Sebastien Bourdais that knocked all three cars out of the race and dropped Pagenaud from fifth to 10th in driver points after the second race of the 2015 IndyCar season.

Quote: “Really too bad about the finish because the Penske Truck Rental Chevy was really fast. It handled great in traffic and we looked like we were heading toward a good result. I’m not sure what Hunter-Reay was thinking there. He just drove us off the track and I’m just glad everyone is OK. I want to thank the fans for staying with us this weekend despite the weather. I think the No. 22 Chevy team will be able to come back strong at Long Beach.”
