Newgarden Eyes Podium In Long Beach After Career-Best Finish in 2015

(SPEEDWAY, Ind.) April 12, 2016 – Advance Notes

  • Ed Carpenter Racing heads to the west coast this weekend for the 42nd Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. Josef Newgarden, driver of the No. 21 Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka Chevrolet for ECR, will be making his 5th start at the 1.968-mile, 11-turn street circuit in downtown Long Beach, Calif.
  • ECR won the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach two years ago with Mike Conway behind the wheel. Newgarden was leading the 2014 race when second place Ryan Hunter-Reay caused a seven-car incident as he attempted a pass. Conway was able to avoid the melee and was fourth following the accident, moving into second place on the ensuing restart. Race leader Scott Dixon was forced to pit for fuel with three laps remaining, handing the lead and the win to Conway.
  • Newgarden started on the front row in the 2012 race in only his third career Verizon IndyCar Series event. He ran in the top five for most of the 2015 event before he was blocked into his pit box by another car, losing precious seconds. He dropped to 7th, but still claimed his best finish in the historic street race.
  • The Verizon IndyCar Series most recently competed at Phoenix International Raceway for the first time since 2005. Newgarden bounced back from a disappointing season opener in the streets of St. Petersburg, earning a 6th place finish despite having to drive from the back of the field twice. Newgarden’s teammate and team owner Ed Carpenter started 5th and ran no worse than 8th before contact with the wall ended his promising night.
  • For the first four events of 2016, Newgarden’s No. 21 will feature a special paint scheme depicting the newest addition to the Fuzzy’s Vodka portfolio. The Commemorative 100th Running Limited Edition bottle, which celebrates the 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500, will be available nationwide this weekend.
  • The Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach weekend will begin with practice on Friday, April 15. The 80-lap race through streets of the California city will take place on Sunday, April 17 with a live broadcast beginning on NBC Sports Network at 4 p.m. ET.

JOSEF NEWGARDEN, NO. 21 FUZZY’S ULTRA PREMIUM VODKA CHEVROLET: “I can’t wait to get to Long Beach! It’s one of the most exciting events of the year. As a street course, it’s very thrilling and it has an amazing atmosphere. It’s definitely one of the tracks I feel like we’ve always been fast at, just not quite able to seal the deal from a results standpoint. The last couple of years we’ve been close, fighting within the top five but not able to get to the podium. Hopefully we can turn that around this year with the Fuzzy’s car and get on to the podium or even to victory lane!”

NEWGARDEN OVERCOMES NIGHT OF ADVERSITY TO FINISH 6TH IN PHOENIX
Carpenter’s Promising Night Comes To Disappointing End

(AVONDALE, Ariz.) April 2, 2016 – Race Notes

  • Josef Newgarden came from the back of the field twice to finish 6th in tonight’s Desert Diamond West Valley Phoenix Grand Prix. A promising night for Ed Carpenter ended early after contact with the wall while he was running in 3rd place.
  • The two Fuzzy’s Vodka cars started one in front of the other in the 250-lap race. Ed Carpenter rolled off the grid from the inside of Row 3 in the 5th position in his No. 20 Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka Chevrolet. Josef Newgarden was just behind in Row 4, starting from 7th.
  • Newgarden’s night was off to a wild start right from his first pit stop of the evening. The crew was not able to fuel the No. 21 Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka Chevrolet on his first trip down the pit lane, forcing him to make an additional stop. He dropped all the way to the back of the field to the 21st position.
  • After managing to stay on the lead lap and work his way back up to 9th, Newgarden saw Charlie Kimball come across the nose of his car in Turn 1. Newgarden was forced to make another unscheduled pit stop for a new front wing and dropped back to 11th as the last car on the lead lap.
  • Carpenter was working to get past Will Power to move into the second position before his last stop of the race. As he backed out of a run to fall back in line, the car picked up understeer. Carpenter was forced into marbles and sent into the Turn 4 wall. He was unharmed in the accident, but his race came to an end on Lap 195. He was credited with a 21st place finish.
  • Prior to his accident, Carpenter ran no worse than 8th the entire event. He is one of only four drivers in the field who competed in the last Indy car race at PIR, held in 2005.
  • For the first four events of 2016, Newgarden’s No. 21 will feature a special paint scheme depicting the newest addition to the Fuzzy’s Vodka portfolio. The Commemorative 100th Running Limited Edition bottle, which celebrates the 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500, will be available nation-wide in mid-April.
  • Carpenter, the only owner/driver in the Verizon IndyCar Series, races exclusively on ovals. His next race will be the 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500. He is a two-time pole winner for the 500-mile race, capturing the coveted first starting spot in both 2013 and 2014.
  • The Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach is up next for Newgarden and the No. 21 Fuzzy’s Vodka crew. The weekend will begin with practice on Friday, April 15. The 80-lap race through streets of the California city will take place on Sunday, April 17 with a live broadcast beginning on NBC Sports Network at 4 p.m. ET.

JOSEF NEWGARDEN, NO. 21 FUZZY’S ULTRA PREMIUM VODKA CHEVROLET, FINISHED 6TH: “The weekend went a little tougher than we wanted, overall. We got great performance out of the car, we just didn’t get the results we probably could have achieved. The race was difficult. If we could have stayed up front all night without having problems, it could have been different. We just kept going to the back of the field, first with the pit stop mishap and then with the broken front wing. We kept charging forward, which speaks volumes to to the performance of the car and what the team produced. It was a shame we couldn’t get a little higher than 6th, but it’s good points. We’ll move on to the next one and try to be a little higher up in the Fuzzy’s car.”

ED CARPENTER, NO. 20 FUZZY’S ULTRA PREMIUM VODKA CHEVROLET, FINISHED 21ST: “The team put Josef (Newgarden) and I in a great position all weekend. It’s been really hard to pass out there, which is surprising. After the warmup, I thought it was going to be a really ‘racey’ race, but everyone just kind of equalized tonight. I got a run on Will (Power) out of Turn 2, thought I was maybe going to be able to get inside in Turn 3 . It wasn’t going to happen. He raced me hard but clean. When I backed out to fall back in line, I just picked up a little bit of understeer and got the marbles. It is a shame for the Fuzzy Vodka car. We were a couple laps away from pitting there and we should be out there fighting for the win. I feel like I let the team down.”

CARPENTER LEADS QUALIFYING EFFORT FOR ECR AT PHOENIX INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY
Carpenter Will Start 5th in Tomorrow’s Race, Newgarden One Row Behind In 7th
(AVONDALE, Ariz.) April 1, 2016 – Qualifying Notes

  • The weekend started off exactly as planned for Ed Carpenter Racing when teammates Ed Carpenter and Josef Newgarden finished the first practice session at the top of the leaderboard. Carpenter set the fastest time of this morning’s practice session with a lap of 192.400 mph in his No. 20 Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka Chevrolet. Newgarden was just behind with the second-quick lap at 192.225 mph.
  • Qualifying for the Desert Diamond West Valley Phoenix Grand Prix featured each driver taking two laps around the 1.022-mile oval to garner their average speed. Hello Castroneves captured the pole position for tomorrow’s 250-lap race.
  • Newgarden was the first of the ECR drivers to qualify. With laps of 19.3675 seconds and 19.3053 seconds in his No. 21 Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka Chevrolet, his average speed of 190.094 was good enough to earn him the 7th starting position on tomorrow night’s grid.
  • Carpenter took his qualification attempt immediately after Newgarden. His two laps of 19.2647 seconds and 19.3053 seconds earned him the 5th position with an average speed of 190.780 mph. An oval specialist, this will be Carpenter’s first race this season.
  • Practice for the Desert Diamond West Valley Phoenix Grand Prix will continue this evening with one more half an hour session. It will be the last practice before tomorrow night’s event.
  • Saturday night’s race will mark the Verizon IndyCar Series’ return to Phoenix International Raceway (PIR). Carpenter is one of only four drivers in the field who competed in the last Indy car race at PIR, held in 2005.
  • Though never having raced at Phoenix International Raceway, Newgarden set the third-fastest lap of the two-day promoter test in February. Carpenter was right behind, setting the fourth-quickest lap overall.
  • For the first four events of 2016, Newgarden’s No. 21 will feature a special paint scheme depicting the newest addition to the Fuzzy’s Vodka portfolio. The Commemorative 100th Running Limited Edition bottle, which celebrates the 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500, will be available mid-April.
  • The Desert Diamond West Valley Phoenix Grand Prix will be broadcast live on NBC Sports Network at 8 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, April 2.

ED CARPENTER, NO. 20 FUZZY’S ULTRA PREMIUM VODKA CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 5TH: “We wanted to be 1-2 all weekend! While we weren’t able to accomplish that, our main goal is to win the race. We still have a good opportunity in front of us for that. It’s a good thing when you’re a little frustrated about starting 5th! I know there’s more speed in the car, we just didn’t quite get the right downforce level for qualifying in these conditions. IndyCar is so tough, we’re fighting over hundredths and thousands. It doesn’t take much to get a jump on your competition so we’ll chalk this up and remember it for next time.”

JOSEF NEWGARDEN, NO. 21 FUZZY’S ULTRA PREMIUM VODKA CHEVROLET: “We hung it out there like we needed to and got up relatively high up in the field. Not quite what we wanted, I thought both myself and Ed were going to be pole contenders for sure. We had great cars with the Fuzzy’s Vodka Chevrolets. We were just battling the conditions there. I don’t think we quite had what we needed, but even though we’re not on the pole we still have fast racecars!”

Carpenter, Newgarden Eager to Return to Phoenix International Raceway After Successful Promoter Test
(SPEEDWAY, Ind.) March 29, 2016 – Advance Notes

  • After a successful promoter test at Phoenix International Raceway in late February, Ed Carpenter Racing is excited to return to the 1.022-mile oval in the desert outside of Phoenix. Team owner Ed Carpenter will join Josef Newgarden in the team’s first two-car effort of 2016.
  • The Desert Diamond West Valley Phoenix Grand Prix will be Carpenter’s first race of the 2016 season. An oval specialist, Carpenter has won three races in the past five years. He will drive the familiar green and gold No. 20 Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka Chevrolet in his 14th season of Indy car racing.
  • Newgarden, who turned 25 in December, is coming off the best season of his Verizon IndyCar Series career. He earned his first win only four races into the 2015 season at Barber Motorsports Park, then led his teammate to the team’s first ever 1-2 finish in the Streets of Toronto in June. Highlights of Newgarden’s year also included two additional podium finishes, capturing his first career pole position at the Milwaukee Mile and leading the most laps (345) of all drivers in 2015.
  • Things did not go according to plan for Newgarden in the season-opening Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. An electrical issue with the No. 21 Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka Chevrolet dropped Newgarden to the back of the field, ultimately causing him to retire from the race early and finish in the 22nd position.
  • Practice and qualifying for the Desert Diamond West Valley Phoenix Grand Prix will take place on Friday, April 1. The race will be broadcast live on NBC Sports Network at 8 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, April 2.

ED CARPENTER, NO. 20 FUZZY’S ULTRA PREMIUM VODKA CHEVROLET: “I am very excited to be getting back in the car for this weekend’s race at Phoenix. It will be my first race since last season and I am chomping at the bit to get back out there! Excitement has been building for this race since it was announced and we are looking for a big weekend with the Fuzzy’s Vodka Chevrolets.”

JOSEF NEWGARDEN, NO. 21 FUZZY’S ULTRA PREMIUM VODKA CHEVROLET: “I’m excited to get back to Phoenix! Hopefully we can get back up on the board this time, St. Pete was a bit of a rough start to the year. Those things happen, but the guys have been working really hard leading up to this next race weekend. It will be great to be running with Ed again, we always work well together. I think we’re going to bring a pretty strong effort to the first oval of the year and hopefully have a good showing in the Fuzzy’s Vodka cars!”

PREFERRED FREEZER SERVICES PARTNERSHIP ALLOWS ECR TO GROW TO THREE CARS FOR THE INDIANAPOLIS 500

PREFERRED FREEZER SERVICES PARTNERSHIP ALLOWS ECR TO GROW TO THREE CARS FOR THE INDIANAPOLIS 500

PFS Joins ECR For Entire 2016 Season; Newgarden, Hildebrand To Carry PFS Colors During The Month Of May
(SPEEDWAY, Ind.) March 22, 2016 – Preferred Freezer Services (PFS), a global leader in advanced design and engineered temperature-controlled warehouses, announced today an expansion of their partnership with Ed Carpenter Racing (ECR).JR Hildebrand will return to the team for the Month of May, joining Josef Newgarden in carrying the blue and white Preferred Freezer Services colors at the Angie’s List Grand Prix of Indianapolis and the historic 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500.

Additionally, PFS will be the primary partner on Newgarden’s No. 21 at the Grand Prix of Boston and the Honda Indy Toronto, site of his second win in 2015. PFS will also be an associate on the No. 21 car for all of the remaining events, while team owner Ed Carpenter will carry the famous PFS polar bear on his firesuit the entire Verizon IndyCar Series season.

The trio of Carpenter, Hildebrand and Newgarden earned the nicknamed “Team America” in 2015 when ECR was the only multi-car team with an all-American line up in the Indianapolis 500. Hildebrand hails from Sausalito, Calif.; Newgarden is a native of Hendersonville, Tenn.; Carpenter, from Indianapolis, is a hometown favorite.

“I’m really glad we were able to put everything together at ECR to continue our program with Preferred Freezer,” commented Hildebrand. “Especially going into this year’s 100th Running of the 500, you know everyone is bringing their absolute best to the fight. After the experience I’ve had over the last two years with this team, I know that we’re going to be bringing a race-winning effort ourselves. I’m looking forward to working with Ed and Josef again and putting the PFS entries up front throughout May!”

Hildebrand, 28, will be making his sixth Indianapolis 500 start and his second in the Angie’s List Grand Prix of Indianapolis. He was named the 2011 Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year after finishing second to Dan Wheldon and won the 2009 Indy Lights Championship. In his five previous Indianapolis 500 appearances, Hildebrand has three Top 10 starts and three Top 10 finishes. He finished 8th in last year’s 500-mile race, the best finish of the three ECR drivers.

As part of the unique arena of motorsports, ECR provides a platform for global companies to showcase their products while building relationships with their own customers. Preferred Freezer Services first joined ECR in 2014, backing the entry of Hildebrand in the Indianapolis 500. They increased their relationship with the team in 2015, supporting Hildebrand in both May races at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. After enjoying substantial gains in brand awareness both on and off track over the past two years, PFS will have a presence at all IndyCar races in 2016.

Carpenter’s business acumen has allowed him to garner a multitude of corporate partnerships throughout his career, assisting him with the formation of his own team in 2012. Entering his 14th year of Indy car competition as a driver, Carpenter has spent five of those years at the helm of ECR. The 35-year-old has led ECR to six race wins since it’s inception, including five in the past two years. He also won back-to-back pole positions himself at the Indianapolis 500 in 2013 and 2014.

“It is great to have Preferred Freezer back for another Month of May and to carry them on the cars all year long,” Carpenter stated. “It is always ‘cool’ to have the giant polar bear around. This is a partnership that has grown each year and we are proud to see it grow again this year. We all have high hopes for all of our team cars at Indianapolis and I can’t wait to get started.”

Newgarden, 25, is coming off a wildly successful season in 2015. Last year alone, he captured two race wins, his first career pole position, two additional podium finishes and led the most laps of all drivers.

“I’m thrilled to have Preferred Freezer Services on the car, they are such a great partner of ECR and very supportive of our efforts. It’s going to be a fun Month of May trying to get them a couple of wins at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway,” declared Newgarden. “I’m even more excited to have JR back on the team, he’s a phenomenal teammate and fantastic driver. I’m excited to work with him and Ed as ‘Team America’ again!”

Tim Broyles, ECR’s General Manager, oversees all day-to-day operations for the entire race team and serves as the race strategist for Carpenter. “I’m really excited to have JR back on board for the 100th, we consider him part of the ECR family,” said Broyles. “I really have to thank all of our partners that have stepped up to make this happen: Fuzzy’s Vodka, Stuart Reed, Gary Edwards, Trut Edwards, John Galiherand Preferred Freezer.”

The blue and white Preferred Freezer Services Chevrolets will make their debut on Thursday, May 12 as Newgarden and Hildebrand begin practice for the Angie’s List Grand Prix of Indianapolis. ECR’s next race will be April 2 at Phoenix International Raceway, where Carpenter will join Newgarden in the team’s first two-car effort of 2016

Josef Newgarden Will Start 12th In Sunday’s Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg

(ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.) March 12, 2016 – Qualifying Notes
Josef Newgarden will roll off the grid from the 12th position in Sunday’s Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. It will be the first race of 16 on the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series schedule.

After setting the 6th fastest time in an earlier practice session today, Newgarden was assigned to Group 1 of Round 1 for qualifications. He took to the track with four minutes to go after switching to a set of sticker red alternate Firestone Firehawks. On his 5th lap, he jumped up to 1st. Though he dropped to 4th by the end of the 10 minute session, it was still enough to advance to the No. 21 Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka Chevrolet to Round 2.

The Fuzzy’s Vodka crew placed scuffed primary black Firehawks back on the car for the beginning of Round 2 qualifications. Newgarden came into the pits for a switch to another set sticker reds, then moved up to 3rd on his first flying lap. By the end of the session, he had fallen to 12th, where he will start tomorrow’s 110-lap race.

Newgarden’s best finish around the 1.8-mile, 14-turn temporary street course came in 2014 when the Hendersonville, Tenn.-native finished 9th. In 2015, Newgarden started 10th and finished 12th despite having a damaged front wing.
Ed Carpenter Racing and Josef Newgarden both made their respective IndyCar debuts in St. Petersburg. The 2012 race in the downtown streets of the Florida city was the first for ECR, Carpenter’s newly-formed team. Newgarden’s first IndyCar start came the same day with Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing on the heels of his 2011 Firestone Indy Lights championship.
For the first four events of 2016, Newgarden’s No. 21 will feature a special paint scheme depicting the newest addition to the Fuzzy’s Vodka portfolio. The Commemorative 100th Running Limited Edition bottle, which celebrates the 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500, will be available in early April.

Newgarden, who turned 25 in December, is coming off the best season of his Verizon IndyCar Series career. He earned his first win only four races into the 2015 season at Barber Motorsports Park, then led teammate Filippi to the team’s first ever 1-2 finish in the streets of Toronto in June. Highlights of Newgarden’s year also included two additional podium finishes, capturing his first career pole position at the Milwaukee Mile and leading the most laps (345) of all drivers in 2015. Heading into the final race of the year, Newgarden was one of six drivers that remained eligible for the Verizon IndyCar Series championship and would finish 7th in the standings.

The Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg will be broadcast live on ABC at 12:30 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, March 13.
JOSEF NEWGARDEN, NO. 21 FUZZY’S VODKA CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 12TH: “I felt pretty positive all day, but it’s perplexing why we didn’t have the speed there in qualifying. Sometimes this is a perplexing track! You can have good balance, the car can feel like it has good grip but you just don’t have the speed. We’ll try and get it sorted for tomorrow and have a good racecar. We’ve got a great crew here with the Fuzzy’s Vodka boys, I’m not worried about doing a good job and executing during the race. I feel confident still, it’s just a shame we couldn’t be a little bit quicker. I felt like we had more performance than what we showed, the car was really good and it felt good, it just wasn’t quick enough.”

Josef Newgarden Leads ECR’s Charge at Season-Opening Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg

(SPEEDWAY, Ind.) March 8, 2016 – Advance Notes

ECR will shift their focus to one car for St. Petersburg, the No. 21 Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka Chevrolet of Josef Newgarden. Newgarden will compete in all 16 Verizon IndyCar Series events in 2016 while team owner Ed Carpenter will run the No. 20 Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka Chevrolet in the five oval races.

Filippi brought home ECR’s best finish to date in the 110-lap race with a 9th place result.

Newgarden’s best finish around the 1.8-mile, 14-turn temporary street course came in 2014 when the Hendersonville, Tenn.-native finished 9th.

JOSEF NEWGARDEN, NO. 21 FUZZY’S ULTRA PREMIUM VODKA CHEVROLET: “I can’t wait to get down to St. Pete and kick things off. It’s been a fun offseason getting to work with the Ed Carpenter Racing group, but you can’t really simulate a real race weekend. It will be nice to see how well our homework has paid off over the offseason and hopefully we’re in a good place to start. I’ve got a lot of faith in our entire Fuzzy’s Vodka crew and we’re looking to start the year with a strong result!”

“We couldn’t ask for a better fit for our brand,” said Jason Butts, Marketing Manager of Fuzzy’s Spirits LLC.  “To have our ultra premium vodka available to race fans in a way that celebrates one of the most prestigious racing events in history is truly exhilarating.  We hope this year will be a defining moment for not only our brand, but also for Ed Carpenter Racing and all INDYCAR fans.”
Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka first sponsored Ed Carpenter’s entry in the 2010 Indianapolis 500 and has been involved with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indy 500 for the past five years. The Indiana-based spirits brand was founded by local Hoosier and two-time major-champion golfer Fuzzy Zoeller.

“Being involved with Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka over the past five years has been a true blessing,” commented Ed Carpenter, the only owner/driver in the Verizon IndyCar Series.  “Their support of our team and the Verizon IndyCar Series has been amazing.  Seeing the new bottles for this May and the paint scheme honoring it is something that we are all proud of and can’t wait to share with the rest of the racing community.”
The 100th Running paint scheme will be on Newgarden’s car for the first four races of the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series season. Carpenter will be the driver of the No. 20 Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka Chevrolet for ECR at all oval events, including the 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500.
