Persistent rain showers at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway forced the cancellation of first-round qualifying Saturday, with qualifying for all positions in the 33-car starting field now scheduled to take place Sunday.

Rain briefly interrupted morning practice, then returned after only two qualifying runs – Honda’s Ryan Hunter Reay (229.845 mph) and Carlos Huertas (228.235) had been completed. Additional showers throughout the early afternoon led race officials to call off activities shortly after 2 p.m. EDT.

As the full field did not have an opportunity to qualify, today’s only two completed runs are erased, and the entire qualifying program is now scheduled to take place on Sunday.

Weather permitting, qualifying for the first 30 positions will begin tomorrow at 10 a.m., with the “Fast Nine” shootout for the pole starting at 1:45 p.m. Group Two qualifying, to set the final three positions in the field, will get under way at 3 p.m. Television coverage begins at 1 p.m. EDT Sunday on ABC.
