Single Point Fueling to Be Mandatory in 2005

According to an article at indyracing.com by Dave Lewandowski, the IRL will mandate single point refueling starting with the 2005 season.
There have been fueling incidents in the past 3 races, with Sam Hornish, Jr's fueler and car catching fire at Nazareth.
As TSO outlined during the Michigan race weekend, the single point fueling rig eliminates both a hose and a "connection" to the car. Thus, when fueling is completed, the team needs only to get 2 connections out of the car instead of 3.
In single point refueling, the hose carrying the fuel and the vent hose both feed into a single "probe" or mechanism. The vent hose is still a separate hose, but it is strapped to the main fuel hose until both hoses reach the mechanism. The fueler then operates just one connection during the pit stop. The crew memmber formerly known as the vent/air jack, is now tasked with operating just the air jack.
Obviously, the simplicity of each crew member handling just one hose greatly reduces the chances of a hose become stuck. It will not eliminate problems caused by the cars leaving too early.

Currently the following teams are using the single point refueling system: Target Chip Ganassi, Patrick Racing, Mo Nunn, SAF, and Fernandez Racing.
Most started using that system at Indy, when it was first legalized.
Thus far in 2004, no team using the single point refueling system has had a pit incident related to refueling the car. (knock on wood).
In the IRL's history, most of the fueling related pit incidents have been with the vent hose. Hopefully, emilinating that extra connection will make for a safer (though it'll never be "safe") pit lane.
