The IZOD IndyCar Series named longtime team executive Derrick Walker as its new president of operations Monday.
Walker, who was general manager of Ed Carpenter Racing, will oversee the sanctioning body's technical and competition side with a focus on containing costs, enhancing innovation and developing safety.
Walker, 68, has more than a quarter-century of experience in IndyCar as a team owner, executive and mechanic. He fielded cars for 414 races across 19 years in IndyCar, Firestone Indy Lights and Formula BMW, notching six victories and 16 pole positions with drivers such as Gil de Ferran, Scott Goodyear, Sarah Fisher, Will Power, Simon Pagenaud, Alex Tagliani and Paul Tracy. In 1991, he owned the Indianapolis 500 entry of Willy T. Ribbs, the first black driver to qualify for the race.
Walker was employed by team owner Roger Penske for 13 years and also has worked in sports cars (Ferrari) and Formula One.
"If I can give back to the sport in whatever way, I'd love that opportunity," the Scotland native said Monday during a news conference at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. "That's what brought me here. I expect a very steep learning curve and to find my place on how to influence and steer the governing body. The field demands a strong governing body with a vision and leadership to match the quality of our teams."
