Dario Franchitti is officially gone from Andretti Green Racing and has now signed with Chip Ganassi Racing's NASCAR team. AGR released him early from his contract, which was set to expire later in the year.
Franchitti's departure opened a seat at the Petite LeMans ALMS race this weekend.
Vitor Meira has been named to drive the XM Satellite Acura in this race alongside Bryan Herta and Tony Kanaan.
Recall that Franchitti has been associated with Honda for the better part of a decade, but will now be racing for Dodge in NASCAR. Here is a statement from Honda's Robert Clarke:
Robert Clarke, President, Honda Performance Development, on Dario Franchitti's move to NASCAR:
"On behalf of everyone at Honda, I'd like to thank Dario for his years of hard work and support of Honda's open wheel racing programs. In his 10 seasons with Honda in CART and the IndyCar Series, Dario won 18 races, more than any other Honda driver.
"Dario's victory this year at the Indianapolis 500, class win for Acura at the 12 Hours of Sebring, and IndyCar Series Championship serve as a fitting culmination to his career at Honda. His skill and dedication in pursuit of victories and championships were an inspiration to us all. We wish him well in his new endeavors."
