Mazda Road to Indy Race Two Report: Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course

MID-OHIO SPORTS CAR COURSE RACE TWO REPORT

SHELBY BLACKSTOCK
NO. 51 STARSTRUCK MAZDA

  • Following his podium finish on the 2.258-mile road course in yesterday’s Race One, the American racer rolled off the grid from P10 for today’s Race Two
  • 25-year-old snagged another top-10 finish in P6 and the race’s third-fastest lap at 01:12.6857

“We started too far back (P10) to really do anything, but we did make our way to finish P6. I had a few off track moments in the race, giving my all through traffic and all… unfortunately I fell back too far in Turn 1 to really get back another position. I’m happy – I think it was a good race because I got my head back around and we posted third-fastest race lap on the last lap of the race. I was running down the car in front of me by multiple tenths (of a second) a lap, so overall really happy with the Andretti Autosport team. P3 and P6 over the weekend – it’s a good points scoring weekend for us, so we’ll take what we can get after the year we’ve had.”

  • Houston, TX resident became a victim of an incident at the race’s initial waived-off start and was hit from behind causing much damage on the No. 22 Mazda
  • Pro Mazda Championship rookie held on for a top-10 finish in the seventh position and is now fourth in the title fight (unofficial)

“Race Two was quite a disaster. They waved the green flag, then all of a sudden it was full course yellow and everyone had to slow down again. Obviously when the front (of the field) started to slow down, the back was quite oblivious and quite late to react; I got hit from behind on the main straight and got spun round into the wall. We broke a the rear wing, diffuser, front wing, but luckily I got back into the race and hustled the car around to P7. There was really nothing much you could do in that situation – it was quite unfortunate for us. All in all thank you to the Andretti Autosport team for doing a great job this weekend; we really struggled with pace, but we’ll definitely work hard to come back strong for Mazda Raceway.”

DALTON KELLETT
NO. 28 K-LINE INSULATORS USA, INC.
ANDRETTI AUTOSPORT MAZDA

  • Queen’s University graduate started today’s Race Two from the 11th position
  • The current Indianapolis, IN resident maneuvered his way to a top-10 finish in eighth place for today’s 20-lap race

“We improved one spot from yesterday finishing P8; obviously not the results we wanted this weekend here at Mid-Ohio with the No. 28 K-Line Insulators USA Mazda. Regardless, there are some positive aspects we can learn and take with us to the final round at Mazda Raceway. This race was a little frustrating because of the quality of driving off the start with the back and forth decisions from the starter’s stand – throwing the green flag and then calling a yellow which really bunched up the field causing some incidents. It’s unfortunate that had to affect some people’s races, but hopefully we can see the quality of driving improve at the final round.”
