Mazda Road To Indy update #1 from the Honda Indy Toronto – practice #1

After a delayed start to the day due to repairs to the track, the 13 Cooper Tires USF2000 powered by Mazda entries finally took to a damp 1.755 mile, 11-Turn Exhibition Place street circuit at 9:42am.

Just before the first rung of the Mazda Road To Indy took the green flag, it was announced that the first USF2000, Pro Mazda and Indy Lights sessions would be cut to only 15 minutes to get back on schedule.

The first few minutes of the session saw the field tip-toeing around the still wet track.

On his second lap, Yufeng Luo, the driver of the No. 23 Pabst Racing machine had an incident in Turn 8. He was able to continue and rejoined the session after getting attention in the pits.

Keyvan Andres Soori and Luke Gabin also had an incident on the opening lap and were both only able to complete a single lap.

The abbreviated session was led by Jake Eidson in his No. 22 Pabst Racing car, and was followed by Nico Jamin, Anthony Martin, Aaron Telitz and Nikita Lastochkin.

Most drivers were able to complete between 8 and 11 laps.

There has been a late addition to the Pro Mazda presented by Cooper Tire field in Toronto. Bryson Schutte, a 19-year old from nearby Uxbridge, Ontario will be making his Mazda Road To Indy debut with M1 Racing. After a successful karting career, Schutte spent last year in the Ontario based Toyo Tires Formula 1600 Championship.

The 18 car Pro Mazda presented by Cooper Tire field took to the track for their 15-minute practice session at 10:05am.

Like the USF2000 cars before them, the Pro Mazda cars were shod with the Cooper Tire rain tires.

A couple of drivers did make minor errors and ended up in the Turn 3 and Turn 8 run-off areas, but the entire 15 minute session was able to be run under green flag conditions.

The session was led by rapid Juncos Racing rookie Timothe Buret, who is making his first start at Toronto. He was followed by his veteran Juncos Racing teammate Jose Gutierrez. Neil Alberico, Florian Latorre and Santiago Urrutia were the remainder of the top five.

The drivers were able to complete between 7 and 11 laps.

The 11-car Indy Lights presented by Cooper Tire field took to the track for their 15-minute practice session just after 10:30am.

Unlike the first two rungs of the Verizon IndyCar Series ladder, the track had dried enough that the Indy Lights field could hit the 1.755 mile, 11-Turn Exhibition Place street circuit on slick Cooper Racing Tires.

There were still some damp spots on track but Spencer Pigot was still able to get within 2.8 seconds of the track record of 1:02.9865, which was set in qualifying by Esteban Guerreri in 2011.

The top five after Spencer Pigot were: Jack Harvey, Juan Piedrahita, RC Enerson and Scott Anderson.

The entire 15 minute session went clean and green and most drivers were able to complete between 10 and 12 laps.

Here is the complete time sheet:
